Dr. J. R. Mudakavi

Prof. J. R. Mudakavi is a leading environmental scientist, with over four decades of experience spanning environmental engineering, pollution control, and advanced analytical instrumentation. Born in Bijapur, Karnataka in 1949, Prof. Mudakavi built a first-class academic record throughout schooling and college years, completing an M.Sc. in Chemistry from IIT Bombay (1972) and a Ph.D. from IIT Madras (1977), with doctoral work focused on the separation and determination of trace quantities of platinum and palladium.
Prof. Mudakavi served for 36 years in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, following an early stint as a Chemical Development Officer at Lakshmi Machine Works, Coimbatore. Between 1986 and 1988, Prof. Mudakavi worked as a Visiting Scientist at the Perkin-Elmer Corporation in Ueberlingen, Germany, specializing in Matrix Modification, Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS), and Hydride Generation AAS — techniques that shaped a lifelong focus on trace and ultra-trace determination of metals and organics.
Prof. Mudakavi's research interests span environmental pollution control, modern instrumental methods of analysis, process development, and activated carbon fibers. Prof. Mudakavi has authored two widely referenced books — "Air Pollution Control and Analysis" and "Hazardous Waste Management" — published over 100 papers and technical reports, and guided 12 M.E./M.Sc. and 2 Ph.D. students over the course of an illustrious career.
Prof. Mudakavi's contributions have been recognized with the Best Engineering Material Development Award for pioneering an Activated Carbon Fabric used in breathing masks, and the Rashtriya Gourava Prashasthi, conferred by the Government of India. Prof. Mudakavi currently serves as Vice Chairman of the EAC-II Committee for Industrial Clearance at the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, and has consulted for organizations including WIDIA, HEG, TANFAC, KSPCB, BWSSB, the National Bureau of Accreditation, UGC, and DST.
Beyond scientific work, Prof. Mudakavi is a committed social worker in the cause of environmental protection and a popular science lecturer.
